About Post-Weight-Loss Tummy Tucks
A post-weight-loss tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure that can address the physical effects of significant weight loss. Approximately 96% of patients are affected by redundant skin after losing weight, which may diminish your sense of self-esteem, present a frustrating new hurdle, and obscure your natural curves. (2) By undergoing this procedure, you can restore a flatter, smoother, and more defined appearance across the abdomen, achieving an appearance that truly reflects the effort you have put into yourself.
Benefits
There are several benefits you can experience when undergoing a post-weight-loss tummy tuck. A few include:
- Smoother Skin: Post-weight-loss tummy tucks remove excess skin, allowing you to restore a smoother and tighter look and feel in places of laxity.
- A Flatter Stomach: Removing excess tissue from your abdomen can create a flatter appearance across the stomach.
- Enhanced Definition: This procedure can restore the natural definition of your waist, creating a more sculpted appearance overall.
- Repaired Muscles: Dr. Lee can tighten inelastic abdominal muscles to address diastasis recti and strengthen the pelvic floor.
- Lasting Results: With the proper maintenance, the results of your procedure can last for many years to come. This eliminates the need for repeat procedures or follow-up treatments.
- Enhanced Confidence: Eliminating the lasting effects of weight loss can heighten your sense of self-esteem and body positivity.
- Tailored Solutions: Dr. Lee personalizes every procedure according to the anatomy and aesthetic goals of his patients.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for this procedure if you have recently lost a significant amount of weight and now face loose and sagging skin around your abdomen.
During your consultation, Dr. Lee will assess your candidacy during your personal consultation. He asks that you be in good general health and that you possess a stable and maintainable weight. You should also be nonsmoking or willing to quit using nicotine.
Personal Consultation
The first step to restoring your natural figure is attending a personal consultation. Here, Dr. Lee will review your medical history, converse with you about your concerns, and establish shared goals. He will also assess your natural anatomy, muscle laxity, and skin quality.
Dr. Lee will then use this information alongside your goals to finalize your candidacy and create your personalized treatment plan. He will decide upon the details of your procedure and explain what you can expect from your preparation or recovery. Depending on your goals, he may also suggest pairing your procedure with another for more comprehensive contouring.

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your procedure, Dr. Lee will give you a set of instructions to help you prepare. They typically include:
- Avoiding Certain Medications: Refrain from taking medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning or anti-platelet properties.
- Prepare Time Away: Arrange time away from your career and other responsibilities to focus on recovering.
- Arrange for Care and Transportation: Have a trusted friend or relative drive you home from your procedure and stay with you the first few days afterwards.
- Run Your Errands: Pick up anything you will need as you heal and rearrange your home so it is a comfortable recovery environment.
- Stop Taking Substances: If applicable, stop consuming nicotine or alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure, as well as the weeks afterwards.
Procedure
Dr. Lee performs each post-weight-loss tummy tuck in his QUAD-A accredited surgical center under general anesthesia. The duration of your procedure will vary, but you can expect it to last a few hours.
Dr. Lee will place an incision that extends between your hips, just above the bikini line. If you have a significant amount of skin, he may elect to extend this incision line outwards towards the hips. He will then proceed to remove your excess skin and soft tissues and tighten any weakened or lax muscles. This includes diastasis recti caused by rapid weight fluctuations. If there is a significant amount of fat found around the abdomen, he may also integrate liposuction into your procedure to address it. Dr. Lee will then close your incisions and transport you to a recovery room to rest.
Recovery
After your post-weight-loss tummy tuck, you will need to take some time away from your responsibilities to focus on your recovery. Dr. Lee encourages his patients to incorporate light walks and gentle movements into their routines as soon as they feel ready. You may return to nonstrenuous activities after resting for approximately 2 to 3 weeks, but you will need to refrain from anything more arduous until you have achieved a full recovery.
Throughout this time, it is common to experience some swelling, bruising, and general tenderness. These effects will subside on their own with time, but you may also manage them using medications and plenty of rest. Dr. Lee will also have you wear a compression garment to limit further swelling. In the event that you have drains, they will be removed at a later follow-up appointment.
Dr. Lee will provide you with a detailed set of written instructions during your consultation. If any questions arise, his team will be available to guide you.
Results
Your results will vary, but you can expect to enjoy smoother and tighter skin, a flatter stomach, a more defined waist, and accentuated contours. Each of these enhancements can contribute to a more sculpted figure and heighten your sense of self-confidence, which may further empower you to wear more form-fitting, revealing, or cropped clothing.
The results of a post-weight-loss tummy tuck are long-lasting, which means you can experience your renewed appearance for several years to come. To preserve them, you will need to maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle habits, as weight fluctuations can alter your long-term appearance.
Corresponding Procedures
Dr. Lee can combine your procedure with several others to recontour your figure more comprehensively. Two procedures include arm lifts and body lifts, but he will give you more customized recommendations during your consultation.
Arm Lifts
An arm lift is a procedure that can remove loose or sagging skin from around the upper arms. Dr. Lee can elect to perform this procedure to eliminate the appearance of “bat wings” and create a smoother transition between your shoulders, upper arms, elbows, and forearms.
Body Lifts
A body lift is a body contouring procedure that can address any inelastic tissue that may have developed across the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks, and thighs. Because of how many regions are addressed, Dr. Lee often breaks this procedure into two separate treatment sessions.
