Botox is an FDA-approved injectable drug that relaxes the muscle. It is designed to reduce common aesthetic facial flaws like wrinkles, fine lines, and folds. JL Plastic Surgery in Boston offers Botox treatments for patients interested in non-surgical facial rejuvenation.
Botox has many uses. It is FDA-approved to treat medical conditions like excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis) and is an effective treatment for chronic migraines and headaches.
It is also FDA-approved for use to treat certain facial lines by weakening the muscles that cause those lines. In the right dose, it can have a very natural appearing effect that both rejuvenates the face and slows down the aging process.
Botox can be safely used on multiple areas of the face. Botox can be used to treat:
- Crow’s feet
- Brow furrows
- Forehead wrinkles
- Nose wrinkles
- Frown lines
- Chin wrinkles
- Neck banding
- Gummy smile
- Masseter (Jaw)
- Trapezius (Neck/Shoulders)
Botox can also be used to slim the jawline in patients with large masseter muscles. This can be useful both functionally, to decrease tension and grinding, as well as aesthetically, to slim the jawline. Typically, 20-25 units on each side can make a significant change and result in a slimmer, more feminine facial shape. Results are noticeable after 4-6 weeks.
Facial Wrinkle Types
Facial wrinkles or lines are categorized into two types, dynamic and static. Dynamic lines are lines that occur only when making a certain facial expression such as frowning, smiling, or raising your eyebrows. With enough time, these lines can become etched into your skin and be present all the time. This is what is known as a static, or etched, line.
Botox is very effective in treating dynamic lines and preventing dynamic lines from turning into static lines. Once lines are etched into the skin, it is very difficult to remove them completely. In this scenario, we recommend regular Botox injections for at least 1 year to soften them as much as possible.
A treatment generally takes 5-10 minutes to perform and requires a series of injections with a tiny needle.
Botox can take up to 2 weeks to become fully effective but most often starts working after a few days.

Recovery from a Botox injection is very easy. We ask that you do not wear makeup and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day. You should also avoid taking aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, Advil, or any similar types of pain medications for 1 week before and 1 week after your injection. Most patients can resume their normal activities right away. There may be some redness and a small amount of swelling around the injection sites that will subside quickly.
