Medspa

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Boston, MA

Non Surgical Services Boston, MA

Our medspa is a full-service center where patients can receive different injectables, energy-based solutions, and relaxing skin care sessions that can rejuvenate and revitalize the health and well-being of their skin. These treatments can address a range of concerns, such as visible signs of aging, textural irregularities, pigmentation issues, and more—all without the need for invasive techniques or damaging approaches.

At JL Plastic Surgery, our medspa offers a comprehensive range of nonsurgical aesthetic treatments designed to improve skin quality, address signs of aging, enhance facial and body contours, and complement surgical results when appropriate.

Our approach is grounded in the same principles that guide our surgical practice: thoughtful treatment planning, attention to anatomy, and natural-looking results. Rather than recommending treatments simply because they are available, we develop individualized plans based on each patient’s concerns, anatomy, goals, and tolerance for downtime.

Led by double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Lee, JL Plastic Surgery serves patients from Newton, Boston, and throughout the Greater Boston area seeking nonsurgical aesthetic care in a physician-led setting.

About Medspas

Medspa treatments combine the relaxing nature of traditional spa offerings with medical solutions. They are non-surgical in nature and target cosmetic or wellness concerns to leave you with a more radiant and youthful-looking appearance.

A Comprehensive Approach to Nonsurgical Aesthetics

Modern aesthetic medicine offers a variety of options for patients who want to improve their appearance without surgery. Injectables, laser treatments, radiofrequency and ultrasound technologies, skin resurfacing, body-contouring treatments, and medical-grade skincare can each address different concerns. The key is determining which treatment, or combination of treatments, is appropriate for the patient.

At JL Plastic Surgery, we base treatment recommendations on your anatomy, skin quality, areas of concern, and desired outcome. In some cases, a single treatment may be appropriate. In others, combining complementary treatments can address multiple concerns as part of a more comprehensive plan.

Why Choose a Plastic Surgery Practice for Medspa Treatments?

Nonsurgical treatments are most useful when they are selected with an understanding of both what they can accomplish and their limitations.

As a plastic surgery practice, we are able to evaluate aesthetic concerns across a broad spectrum of surgical and nonsurgical treatment options. For some patients, Botox, filler, laser resurfacing, Ultherapy PRIME, or another nonsurgical treatment may be appropriate. For others, surgery may offer a more appropriate way to address the underlying concern. Since we offer both options, we can confidently discuss the pros and cons of both options and determine the right treatment plan that aligns best with your goals. At the very least, a thoughtful discussion is a great start to helping you make a decision on what will be best for you.

Our goal is to help patients understand their options and develop a treatment plan that makes sense for their anatomy, goals, and desired recovery.

Available Treatments

Nonsurgical Lower Eyelid Lift

A non-surgical lower eyelid lift is a procedure that improves the appearance of your lower eyelids using cutting-edge aesthetic technology. It utilizes a combination of radiofrequency (RF) microneedling and fractional CO2 laser resurfacing to address concerns affecting the superficial and underlying layers of your skin.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel resurfaces the skin and stimulates the production of new collagen. We offer several different strengths of peel to penetrate different layers of the skin, allowing you to refresh the appearance and texture of your skin and correct concerns such as:

  • Acne
  • Melasma
  • Pigmentation concerns
  • Enlarged pores
  • Wrinkles and creases
  • Rosacea
  • Acne scars
  • Stretch marks (1)

Emsculpt Neo

Emsculpt Neo is a body contouring treatment that uses a combination of RF energy and High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to burn fat, build new muscle, and tighten the skin. (2) This treatment emits RF energy while stimulating supramaximal contractions in the targeted region, which are stronger contractions than what you can achieve on your own at the gym. It is intended to improve muscle tone and reduce localized fat in appropriately selected patients.

Emsculpt NEO is not a substitute for weight loss or surgical body contouring. A consultation can help determine whether the treatment is appropriate for your anatomy and goals.

Pronox

Pronox is a patient-administered nitrous oxide (laughing gas) delivery system that can enhance your comfort during procedures. It is a blend of 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen, (3) and it leaves your system after approximately 5 minutes with no lingering side effects.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are gel-like injectables that are administered beneath the skin to elevate your facial volume, augment certain features, and smooth your skin’s surface. Different fillers are manufactured with different characteristics to address certain concerns and regions of the face. (4) This means you can easily tailor your treatment according to your desired results. At JL Plastic Surgery, we can treat the lips, cheeks, jawline, and other regions of the face using fillers such as Sculptra, Juvederm, Radiesse, or Restylane.

DiamondGlow

DiamondGlow is a medical-grade resurfacing treatment that can rejuvenate the skin. (5) It thoroughly cleanses and exfoliates the skin before extracting impurities from the pores. A serum is then applied to the skin to target any additional concerns, such as dullness, dryness, or age-related changes. It may be incorporated into an ongoing skincare regimen to improve skin texture and appearance with minimal downtime.

EltaMD Sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of the easiest steps you can take in your skincare routine to prevent visible signs of aging from forming. Our team recommends EltaMD sunscreen to each of our patients because it is a lightweight formula that can easily be applied each day. They offer tinted and untinted sunscreens for those who have sensitive skin or are prone to concerns such as acne.

Botox

Botox is an injectable treatment that can soften visible signs of aging and restore a more youthful-looking appearance. This treatment is a type of neuromodulator, which means it inhibits certain neurotransmitters responsible for the dynamic muscle movements that form wrinkles and creases. (6) Many common treatment areas include the glabella (the area between the eyebrows) and crow’s feet, but can include others such as the lower face, neck, masseters, trapezius muscles, hands, and underarms.

Masseter Botox

Masseter Botox is an injectable treatment that can help you minimize teeth grinding and achieve a slimmer, more chiseled jawline. It utilizes the Botox formula to relax the masseter muscle beneath the cheekbones and lower jawbones and restore a more balanced, smooth, and slender appearance.

Facial Balancing

Facial balancing is a subtle treatment that can improve your facial proportions through the use of Juvederm fillers. They consist of carefully selected injectables that can correct the appearance of uneven contours in regions such as the cheeks or jawline, allowing you to address concerns detracting from your facial aesthetics. Each treatment is individualized according to your specific needs and anatomy.

Semaglutide Injections

Semaglutide injections are a GLP-1 receptor agonist that may be prescribed as part of a medically supervised weight-management program for appropriate patients. It can lower your blood glucose levels and promote weight loss by activating certain receptors found in the pancreas, brain, and GI tract. (7) It slows gastric emptying, increases cell proliferation in the pancreas, and reduces glucagon release, contributing to a reduction in your overall appetite and food cravings.

During your consultation, we will review your medical history, goals, and other relevant factors to determine whether medical weight management with semaglutide is appropriate for you.

Once deemed appropriate, we send in the prescription for your medication to whichever pharmacy you prefer.

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling combines controlled microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered beneath the skin’s surface. It uses a device featuring small needles to stimulate a remodeling response within the skin and may improve concerns such as skin texture, fine lines, acne scarring, and mild skin laxity. RF energy is then emitted into your skin’s deeper layers to tighten and contract it, leaving you with a smoother and more youthful look. (8)

Laser Skin Resurfacing and CoolPeel

Laser skin resurfacing and CoolPeel are two dermatological treatments that can refresh your skin and restore a more youthful and radiant complexion. Laser skin resurfacing is a treatment that uses laser energy to target both underlying and superficial layers of the skin and stimulate a healing and remodeling response. Depending on treatment intensity, it may be used to address concerns including uneven texture, fine lines, sun damage, pigmentation irregularities, and other signs of skin aging.

On the other hand, CoolPeel emits fractional CO2 energy to address superficial skin damage. Its treatment intensity and expected downtime are tailored according to your skin and goals.

Trapezius Botox

Botox can also be used to reduce activity in the upper trapezius muscles, which extend across the upper back, shoulders, and neck. This treatment is sometimes referred to as “TrapTox.”

For appropriately selected patients, injections into the upper trapezius can reduce the prominence of these muscles, potentially creating a softer transition between the neck and shoulders and a more elongated appearance of the neck.

Because the trapezius muscles play an important role in shoulder and neck movement, treatment requires careful assessment of anatomy, muscle size, and function. The amount of Botox and injection pattern are individualized for each patient, and results vary.

Nonsurgical Rhinoplasty

Nonsurgical rhinoplasty, which may also be called a liquid rhinoplasty, uses carefully placed dermal fillers to modify the appearance of the nose—avoiding the need for surgery. In appropriately selected patients, fillers can be used to smooth certain contour irregularities, improve the appearance of a dorsal hump, or create greater balance between the nose and surrounding facial features.

Unlike surgical rhinoplasties, nonsurgical rhinoplasty does not remove tissue or make the nose physically smaller. Instead, strategically adding volume can alter contours and create the appearance of a straighter or more balanced nasal profile.

Because the nose contains important blood vessels and has a complex three-dimensional anatomy, nonsurgical rhinoplasty requires careful patient selection and precise injection technique. It is not appropriate for every patient or every cosmetic concern.

During your consultation, Dr. Lee will evaluate your nasal anatomy and goals to determine whether filler can reasonably achieve the change you are seeking or whether surgical rhinoplasty would be a more appropriate option.

Medical-Grade Skincare

A thoughtful skincare regimen can help maintain skin quality and complement in-office treatments. It is what patients can do at home to help fight the signs of aging. This is an essential component of any anti-aging treatment plan as long as you have the right person guiding your product use.

Daily sun protection is particularly important for limiting ongoing ultraviolet damage and helping maintain improvements in pigmentation, texture, and overall skin quality. Our team can recommend the right sunscreen and other skincare products based on your skin type and concerns.

Ultherapy PRIME

Ultherapy PRIME is a noninvasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production within the deeper structural layers beneath the skin. Unlike laser and radiofrequency treatments, ultrasound energy allows treatment to be delivered at specific depths without disrupting the surface of the skin.

Ultherapy PRIME may be used to address mild to moderate skin laxity in areas such as the face, jawline, neck, and décolletage. The system also incorporates real-time ultrasound imaging, allowing the provider to visualize tissue layers and customize energy delivery based on the patient’s individual anatomy.

Because Ultherapy PRIME works by stimulating the body’s natural collagen-remodeling process, improvement develops gradually over the months following treatment. Results vary among patients, and the treatment does not reproduce the degree of lifting that can be achieved surgically.

Ultherapy PRIME may be appropriate for patients who are beginning to notice skin laxity but are not ready for, or do not require, a surgical procedure. A consultation can help determine whether Ultherapy PRIME or another treatment is better suited to the patient’s anatomy and goals.

Candidates

Your candidacy will depend on the specific procedure being considered. Our treatments are highly effective for a range of concerns and conditions, such as visible signs of aging, uneven texture, pigmentation concerns, laxity, and more.

To undergo one of our relaxing treatments, you should be in good general health and hold realistic expectations regarding your results. You should also be free from any skin infections or acne breakouts in the targeted skin areas.

Personal Consultation

A successful aesthetic treatment plan begins with communicating to your medspa specialist what you would like to improve, rather than simply selecting a procedure from a menu. During your personal consultation, your medspa specialist will meet with you individually to discuss each aspect of your treatment. They will review your medical history and current skincare routine, ask about your concerns, and learn more about your desired outcomes and expectations. Depending on the treatment being considered, they may also evaluate your facial anatomy, skin quality, pigmentation, texture, laxity, or body-contouring concerns.

Your medspa specialist will then use this information to recommend an individualized treatment plan. This may involve a single procedure or a combination of treatments performed over time.

If a nonsurgical treatment is unlikely to provide the improvement you are seeking, they can also discuss other available options. They will also answer any questions you may have.

If you are ready to take this first step and begin restoring your radiance, please contact us online or call (617) 340-2822. We offer consultations at our Newton office.

FAQ

Which medspa treatment is right for me?

The appropriate treatment for your needs will depend on your exact concerns and desired results. Wrinkles caused by facial movement, volume loss, pigmentation, skin laxity, and textural changes have different causes and may require different approaches. Attending a consultation will allow our team to evaluate your concerns and discuss the treatments that may be right for you.

Can different treatments be combined?

Yes. Different treatments may address separate components of facial aging, skin quality, or body contouring and can sometimes be incorporated into the same overall treatment plan. Each treatment does not necessarily need to be performed during the same appointment and may be staged over time.

How much downtime should I expect?

Downtime varies substantially by treatment. Botox and many other injectable or skincare treatments generally involve relatively little downtime, while more intensive laser resurfacing may require a longer recovery period. Before your treatment, we will discuss expected redness, swelling, peeling, bruising, activity restrictions, and other relevant recovery considerations.

Will my medspa treatment be painful?

The level of discomfort you experience will vary according to the treatment performed and your individual pain tolerance. Some procedures cause minimal discomfort, while treatments such as laser resurfacing and radiofrequency microneedling may be more uncomfortable. When appropriate, your medspa specialist will use topical or local anesthetics to improve your comfort. With other treatments, we may recommend IV sedation as a means of minimizing your discomfort while maximizing your results.

How long do medspa treatments take?

Your treatment time will depend on the treatment performed and the number of areas being addressed. Some injectable appointments can be relatively brief, while device-based procedures or combination treatments may require more time. Your provided treatment plan will include information about your anticipated treatment and recovery time.
