Facelift or Neck lift (rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic procedure to rejuvenate an aging face and neck. Typically, as someone gets older, excess skin can develop along the jawline and neck area giving the appearance of an aged face. Reducing skin laxity in these areas can dramatically restore a more youthful appearance.
Harvard-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Lee of JL Plastic Surgery in Boston is highly skilled and focuses on providing beautiful and natural-looking results. He can provide you with exceptional results from your facelift.

The Facelift Procedure
This procedure typically takes 3-4 hours and is performed under sedation anesthesia. Because everyone ages differently, it is important to customize each person’s operation to address the specific needs of each individual. During your consultation in our Boston office, Dr. Lee will assess your face and recommend the best option.
Face/neck lift surgery is commonly performed by addressing both the neck and face. The incisions are around both ears and usually a small incision just under the chin. Once the underlying facial structural support is exposed (known as the SMAS), it is tightened with sutures, and then the skin is laid back over the SMAS. This provides the most natural appearing result while avoiding the “pulled” or “windswept” look.
Common reasons that patients undergo a face/neck lift include:
- The aged appearance of the jawline and mouth
- The aged appearance of the neck
While this surgery can make a dramatic improvement in someone’s appearance, it will not address some of the other changes that occur with aging which can include the forehead, brows, eyelids, nose, lips, or skin quality. As a result, Dr. Lee may recommend other procedures to create a facial harmony that will lead to a more natural and aesthetic look.
Facelift Recovery
Recovery typically lasts 1-2 weeks. Prescription pain medications are usually taken for 3-4 days after which most patients only need Tylenol. Sutures need to be removed at 5-7 days and bruising, if present, can remain for 1-2 weeks.
Most people take 1-2 weeks off from work/school because they don’t want people to see their faces during the facelift recovery process. Most patients feel comfortable showing their face at 10-14 days but if you do not mind people seeing you during the early recovery process, you can be back to work or school in less than a week.
