Comparing Abdominoplasty Techniques – Why I Prefer Drainless

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is one of the most performed cosmetic surgeries available. The operation is designed to improve the contour of the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin. During the procedure, I also tighten the abdominal muscles that can become stretched and separated through life and pregnancy.

Abdominoplasties can be done either with or without drains. With a standard technique, drains are used to prevent a seroma, or fluid accumulation in the abdomen. Patients return home after surgery with plastic tubes originating in their abdomen that collect fluid which must be measured and recorded for the first 5-7 days after surgery.

To eliminate the risk of a drain-site infection and to offer an easier recovery, I employ a drainless technique. As opposed to drains expelling the fluid, I use anchoring sutures to eliminate the space in which fluid can accumulate. Consequently, the minimal amount of fluid remaining is absorbed by your body, which is completely safe. Throughout my practice, patients have shared how the absence of drains makes for a more desirable recovery.

“Truly the best thing I’ve ever done. If you’re thinking about it or second guessing yourself, just do it. You won’t regret it.”

Tummy tucks are one of my favorite operations to perform since it can often be life-changing for patients. I see a lot of mothers that are interested in improving the contour of their abdomen after pregnancy and are struggling to do so on their own through diet and exercise. Unfortunately, excess skin cannot be helped by the gym, so patients frequently share they wish they had come in sooner.

“I couldn’t work off my stomach from my last baby, so I decided on a tummy tuck and loved the idea of drainless. I was so scared but booked and it absolutely has been life changing.”

Abdominoplasties can also directly change a patient’s self-image by boosting their self-confidence. To me, being able to improve a patient’s self-esteem is the most rewarding part of my day. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable and confident in their own body and I always emphasize how improving patient’s self-perception is a key goal of my practice.

“At 2 months post op I had the confidence to wear a two-piece bathing suit for the first time in 25 years.”

For anyone considering a cosmetic procedure, scheduling a consultation is always a great first step. There is an abundance of information available online but speaking first-hand with a surgeon is the best way to address your concerns so YOU can make the decision that’s right for YOU!
