Breast reduction surgery is performed to decrease the size of large heavy breasts. In severe cases, insurance will cover the cost of this surgery if patients suffer from neck pain, back pain, and shoulder grooving from their bra straps. Depending on the insurance company, there may also be additional requirements.
This procedure takes 2-4 hours to perform and is generally done under a sedation anesthesia.
Breast reduction can be performed in a variety of different ways. Most commonly, it requires an inverted T incision but can also be done with a vertical (or lollipop) incision in certain cases. It is important to know that a breast lift is part of having a breast reduction, so patients always get an improved breast shape and nipple position after breast reduction surgery.
A good candidate for breast reduction is someone who has symptoms of heavy breasts. This can include neck pain, back pain, and shoulder grooving from the bra strap. Sometimes patients have gone through physical therapy without any improvement in their symptoms.
Patients are usually back to work or school after 1 week. Prescription pain medication is usually only required for a few days. You will be sent home from surgery with a surgical bra, but many patients switch to an unpadded, non-underwired sports bra of their choice. Dr. Lee recommends getting one with a front zipper which makes it easier to get on and off.
